Cheap Auto Insurance: How Low Should You Go?

family by carIs it possible to pay too little for Battle Creek auto insurance? Though getting cheap auto insurance is often a very good thing, it is possible to choose a policy that doesn't provide enough for your needs. The last thing most vehicle owners want to do is to have a policy, they pay into, that can't cover their needs in a claim situation.

Are you paying too much or too little for car insurance?

The Average Cost of Auto Insurance

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, a report released in January of 2013 indicates that the cost of insurance has fallen from an average of $818 in 2006 to $791 in 2010. That's good news. Yet, for anyone who has the need for a new auto policy right now, their primary goal is to get a rate that's much lower.

What Underpaying Often Means

A lower insurance rate is not always a good idea. When comparing policies, you'll need to carefully compare the details. If one policy becomes less effective for you, due to a reduce feature, it is not really a benefit to pay less for that policy than one that provides the right type of coverage. Here are some examples.

  • Reduced coverage - Many insurance companies provide reduced coverage as a part of their policy. They may provide up to $50,000 in coverage rather than $100,000. If that's too low to cover you in the event of a significant accident, the policy may not be worthwhile.
  • It's only liability - A big risk factor, and one of the problems with some advertising in the auto insurance industry right now, is misleading context. If you are only getting liability coverage, you'll pay much less. Yet, if you are in a car accident, this policy does not protect your vehicle or your loss at all. It only protects the other guy.
  • Exclusions included - Another way that some companies drop the price is by excluding specific risk factors. For example, you may not have flood insurance on your cheap auto insurance policy. Other policies do. Look at what is specifically excluded.
  • It's poor service - Unfortunately, some companies are not as qualified to provide great customer service as others are. That's a big deal when you are stuck in a situation where you need a claims adjuster right away. Don't forget that you are (or are not) paying for quality of service, too.

What can you do to get cheap auto insurance that's also good for you? The best option is simply to compare policies as apples-to-apples. You need to look at what companies are offering to you in the way of coverage, deductibles, discounts and types of exclusions and then determine who is giving you the most bang for your investment. This is going to make the biggest difference in terms of your investment value.

It's not easy to find cheap auto insurance that's worthwhile, but it is possible to get a great policy inexpensively. We can help. Contact Allen Harmon Insurance today at 269-441-5156 to get a quote today.
